4th Republic is a timely political thriller from Ishaya Bako. It asks the question: “this election year, what kinda democracy do you want?
I love that we are getting a movie centered around “Democracy, Justice and the Nigerian way” in an election year.
4th Republic casts Kate Henshaw as a Mabel King, a gubernatorial candidate. The Fourth Republic also refers to the Republican government of Nigeria.
Following a violent and heavily marred governorship election, aspirant Mabel King and her idealistic campaign manager, Ike try to discover what went wrong and seek justice through an election petition tribunal.
Their quest soon becomes a race to find and convince two young witnesses with evidence of violence at the elections to testify in court; before the opposing candidate finds them first.
In the teaser below, you can hear Kate Henshaw’s character taking her oath.
I, Mabel King, do solemnly swear that I will be faithful; I will discharge my duties to the best of my ability in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Something our current president is obviously not interested in.

The movie’s cast includes Yakubu Mohammed, Manuel Bimbo, Enyinna Nwigwe, Linda Ejiofor, Bimbo Manuel, Sani Muazu, Sifon “Kalistus” Okoi, and Preach Bassey.
The screenplay is written by Ishaya Bako, Zainab Omaki and Emil B. Garuba.
Ishaya Bako, the director, is not new to stories that shake political tables.
His documentary Fueling Poverty, which discussed the activities of the Occupy Nigeria group concerning poverty and fuel subsidy, was banned for public consumption by the Nigerian government through the National Film and Video Censor Board (NFVCB) because “its content are highly provocative and might incite or encourage public disorder…”
There are many things to be excited for here: a political thriller is refreshing and bold. I love audacious filmmakers.
Also, Kate Henshaw’s intensity will be explored in a different manner. I am excited about how she will deliver in this role.
4th Republic will be released in cinemas nationwide in April 2019. Tell me what you think about the teaser in the comment section below.
